We’re fans of the concept that January is the best time to focus on marketing.

Let me paint you the picture, Christmas is gone, the New Year and its multitude of resolutions is nearly over, and we don’t have to worry about any of it again for another 10 months when the madness happens all over again. Time to sit back, relax, take a break because nothing usually happens in January in Australia and we’re twiddling our thumbs until everyone is back to work and the kids are back at school. But wait, isn’t that the best time to plan the year ahead?

This is why we think January is the best time to focus on marketing. You’ve made your New Year’s resolutions, some of them about what you’re going to do with your business this year. So why not add some marketing goals to your business plan?

Here are some tips on marketing initiatives to focus on in January:

  • Set up a customer profile and add information on their buying habits
  • Think about the cyclical nature of your business. Do sales increase at certain times of year? If so, why?  Once you figure that out, think about what you can do to pre-empt that buying cycle and tempt clients and prospects with incentives around that time
  • Take a look at what your competitors did last year and jot down some ideas of what to do and what not to do
  • Plan out your social media posts
  • Factor in special holidays and reminders
  • Research groups you can join and make a contribution to, and find people to follow
  • Set out a plan for customer newsletters. Jot down some ideas that can help keep it interesting
  • Write a few blogs or record some videos and preload your posts to go out at scheduled times.
